Lessons From Auschwitz

Erin English and Natalie Montgomery were selected to be part of the Holocaust Educational Trust's 'Lessons From Auschwitz' project. As part of the project, they, along with 200 other students from schools across Northern Ireland, visited Auschwitz concentration camp in Poland on Wednesday the 29th March. The girls attended an orientation seminar last week where they were addressed by a Holocaust survivor Mala Tribich as part of their preparation.

They arrived in Poland at 10am and after a short visit to the town of Oswiecim, they went to Auschwitz I. There, the girls were able to see for themselves the hair, mountains of shoes and spectacles and other personal affects of the Jews that were deported to the camp. After visiting the gas chamber and crematorium of the camp, they made their way to Auschwitz II - Birkenau. The girls saw the rail lines at Birkenau where Jews were examined then sent to either work stations or their death.

We arrived home around 11pm on Wednesday after a challenging but deeply rewarding visit.
