Science Shack is up and running again for the new school year. This club for Years 8-10 spent the first session making lots of lovely, fluffy slime. Come along next week to make straw rockets.
Congratulations to our Year 10 Bronze Duke of Edinburgh group who have successfully completed the qualifying expedition. All pupils performed admirably navigating from Ballintoy to Dunluce Castle over 2 days. The 24km scenic journey took the past 3 harbours, 2 castles and 1 world heritage site. The pupils camped in a field overlooking the sea where they all pitched their own tents and cooked their own food. Each pupil was a credit to the school and will hopefully continue on to Silver.
On Fri 15th June we had a Staff Coffee Morning to raise money for The Child Brain Injury Trust & The Neuro Surgical Unit, in aid of a Year 11 pupil Cameron Taggart who is currently still in hospital suffering with a Brain Injury following a serious road accident. We would like to thank everyone for their efforts & the FANTASTIC amount raised of £385.45. #ghsfamily
Congratulations to Daina Cardwell who at the English Wrestling Championship in Derbyshire over the weekend came 2nd in the 64kg Class. #aspiretosucceed #learningwithoutlimits
10 pupils from Year 10 just successfully completed their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Practice Expedition. These pupils headed off early on Saturday morning and navigated their way around Ballypatrick Forest before heading to Watertop Open Farm to camp. At the farm they had the opportunity to see rabbits, puppies, a llama and more. The pupils cooked their own food for the evening, particularly popular were super noodles and beans. On the Sunday they headed off again after a good night’s sleep to complete their journey, visiting a vanishing lake along the way. All pupils performed exemplarily throughout the weekend and can now look forward to their qualifying expedition along the north coast in June.
Congratulations to Ella Cassells for winning a Bronze medal yesterday with a throw of 7.83m in the NEBSSA Athletics Finals.
Our other 4 athletics also acquitted themselves well, competing in very difficult weather conditions; Steven Crumlin (Year 8) 4th in Shot, Ellie Redfern (Year 8) 6th in Long Jump, Katie Scott (Year 11) 5th in Discus and Timothy Rea (Y9) 6th in Shot.
Today the Year 12 BTEC Sports Studies classes participated in a practical assessment for their Outdoor Activities Unit. They demonstrated a wide range of skills in rock climbing and had lots of fun in doing so. The PE department would like to thank the team from Pathway Activities for bringing in their climbing wall.
Congratulations to Daina Cardwell on her recent First place in the Ulster Freestyle Wrestling Championship. There really is no stopping this girl!.
On Saturday 9 Year 10 pupils completed their first hike as part of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme. These pupils are working towards their Bronze Award and on Saturday got the chance to put what they have learnt in school into practice. The group navigated their way around Black Mountain, where they enjoyed some great views over Belfast, then had lunch at the bottom of Divis where they made themselves some hot chocolate before climbing to the summit. The weather was fantastic and everyone enjoyed themselves, we are now looking forward to and overnight hike in Ballypatrick Forest in 2 weeks.
Fresh from his victory in Belfast here comes the Jackal again. This time his challenger is Glengormley High! What will happen when Carl comes home to his old school? Let’s hope he returned all his library books and doesn’t owe anybody homework!
