A Typical School Day
“On my first day at Glengormley High School I was nervous because it was a new school and I only knew a few people. I didn’t know any of the teachers and I also wasn’t used to wearing a blazer and a tie.
Every day starts with morning registration in your Form class, and from 8:45-9:00am. At the start of the year we were not allowed to move around different classrooms because of the Covid-19 restrictions. Our teachers would come to our Form class depending on what subjects we had. But if we have Technology, Art, Science, HE or PE we go out to the department. Every day is made up of periods that last 55 minutes. It is always two periods then break time, then another two periods until lunch time. There are two more periods after lunch to finish up the day, except for Mondays and Fridays when we only have 5 periods in the day.
Break time is fifteen minutes and there is a whole playground just for Year 8 pupils! Lunch time is forty minutes and you go to the canteen to get your lunch. You can buy lunch, or if you have a packed lunch, you can just sit at the tables or outside on the benches. Then you have the option of playing games in the Year 8 playground or you can just talk with your friends. I like playing football with my mates.
The school is in the process of becoming fully integrated, which means Protestants, Catholics and people of other religions will all be welcome. I have been asked, along with others, to represent Year 8 in the meetings that discuss and plan how we will change the school, which has been really exciting.
You can earn achievements by having high attendance, and positive points. There is also tracking tests that monitors how well you are doing in all your subjects. I’m really pleased that mine have all gone well! I really love it in GHS and I think you will too!”
